General contractors in Alabama must be licensed by the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors for any project with a contract value of $50,000 or more; licenses are issued in classifications such as Building Construction, Highway, and Specialty. Electrical contractors are licensed by the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board, and electricians are credentialed through the same body with journeyman and master-level classifications. Plumbers are licensed by the Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board, which issues journeyman and master plumber licenses regardless of project dollar amount. HVAC contractors must be licensed by the Alabama Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors Board for mechanical work. Roofing contractors working on projects of $10,000 or more are required to hold a general contractor license or a specialty contractor license under the ALBGC; there is no separate standalone roofing board in Alabama.
