Trade Contractor Resources for Delaware (Licensing, Permits, Tools)
Trade business resources for Delaware.
Delaware regulates trade contractors through a combination of state-level licensing boards under the Division of Professional Regulation (DPR) and local jurisdictional requirements, depending on the trade. Unlike many states, Delaware does not have a single unified general contractor license at the state level; instead, specific trades such as electrical and plumbing are licensed by dedicated state boards, while general construction work is primarily regulated at the county or municipal level.
State licensing board
Delaware Division of Professional Regulation - Board of Electrical Examiners / Delaware Division of Revenue (contractor licensing varies by trade)
Electricians in Delaware must be licensed through the Delaware Board of Electrical Examiners (under DPR), with license classes including Journeyman Electrician and Master Electrician, the latter being required to pull permits and operate an electrical contracting business. Plumbers are licensed through the Delaware Board of Plumbing Examiners, also under DPR, with Journeyman and Master Plumber designations. HVAC contractors are licensed through the Delaware Board of Plumbing, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Examiners. General contractors (GCs) do not require a statewide license in Delaware; instead, registration and licensing requirements are enforced at the county level (e.g., New Castle, Kent, and Sussex Counties each have their own requirements). Roofing contractors similarly fall under local county or municipal permitting authority rather than a single state board. All contractors performing work in Delaware must also register with the Delaware Division of Revenue as a business operating in the state.
