Official authority

Mississippi State Board of Contractors

Mississippi requires a state contractor license for any single project with a contract price of $50,000 or more for general building, residential, or specialty work. General contractors fall under classifications such as Building Construction, Residential, or Highway/Heavy, while specialty trades have their own categories. Electrical contractors must be licensed through the State Board of Contractors' electrical division for projects meeting the threshold, and plumbing contractors are similarly required to hold a state plumbing license for work above the trigger amount. HVAC contractors must obtain a specialty license for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work. Roofing contractors performing work valued at $10,000 or more on a single contract are required to hold a state contractor license under the roofing specialty classification. Projects below these thresholds may still require local permits but do not always trigger the state licensing requirement.
