Montana requires general contractors to hold a Contractor Registration if they perform work valued at $5,000 or more (including labor and materials). Electricians must be licensed as either a Journeyman Electrician or Electrical Contractor, with separate endorsements for residential and commercial work. Plumbers require a Plumber license (Journeyman or Master) and plumbing contractors must hold a Plumbing Contractor license. HVAC work falls under the Plumber or a separate HVAC endorsement depending on scope. Roofing contractors are required to register as contractors if their work meets the $5,000 threshold, but there is no separate roofing-specific trade license at the state level. All licensed trades also require proof of workers' compensation insurance and, for contractors, general liability coverage.
