Rhode Island Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board (CRLB)

Rhode Island requires general contractors and subcontractors performing work over $1,000 to register with the CRLB as either a Residential Contractor or a Commercial Contractor, depending on project type. Electricians are licensed through the CRLB in classifications including Master Electrician, Journeyman Electrician, and Apprentice, with Master license required to pull permits. Plumbers are similarly licensed as Master Plumber or Journeyman Plumber, with the Master license required to contract for plumbing work. HVAC and mechanical contractors must hold a Mechanical Contractor license (also administered through the CRLB) to perform heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work. Roofing contractors must register as a contractor with the CRLB and may need a Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) registration for residential work; there is no separate standalone roofing license class, but all work above $1,000 triggers registration requirements.
