Can I install my own EV charger as a homeowner?

Whether a homeowner can self-install depends on state and local rules. Most jurisdictions allow homeowner electrical work in their own primary residence with a homeowner permit, but the work must still meet NEC and pass inspection. Under NEC 2026, the load calculation, GFCI requirements, and panel-capacity assessment make a clean DIY install substantially harder than under prior code cycles. Most homeowners come out ahead hiring a licensed installer, both on inspection success and on tax-credit eligibility.

What's the difference between a Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 charger?

Level 1 chargers use a standard 120V outlet and deliver roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour of charging — slow but no install required. Level 2 chargers use a 240V circuit (typically 32A–48A) and deliver 20–40 miles of range per hour — the standard residential install. Level 3 (DC fast charging) is 480V three-phase, commercial-class, delivers 100+ miles of range per hour, and requires utility coordination and substantial site infrastructure.

Does NEC 2026 require GFCI on EV chargers?

Effectively, yes for most residential Level 2 installs. NEC 2026 Section 210.8 extends outdoor GFCI requirements to outlets up to 60 amps, which catches the typical Level 2 EV charger circuit (40A or 50A). The GFCI protection can be a GFCI breaker, a GFCI receptacle, or integrated into the EVSE itself, as long as the device is listed for the application.

Do I need a permit for an EV charger installation?

In nearly every jurisdiction, yes. The install adds a dedicated branch circuit and a substantial continuous load, both of which trigger electrical permitting. Some jurisdictions have a streamlined EV-charger permit pathway; most use the standard residential electrical permit. Skipping the permit voids tax-credit eligibility and creates problems on resale when the next owner's inspector finds unpermitted work.

How long does an EV charger install take?

From the homeowner's perspective, a typical residential Level 2 install runs 1–3 weeks: 2–5 days for permit review, 1–2 days for the actual install, and 3–7 days for inspection scheduling. The actual on-site work is usually 3–6 hours. If a service upgrade is required, add 1–4 weeks for utility coordination and the upgraded service drop.
